Em 1953, Nova York, dois jovens colegiais conheceram-se enquanto interpretavam os peculiares personagens da peça “Alice no País das Maravilhas”. Tendo em comum o gosto pela música, Paul Simon e Arthur ‘Art’ Garfunkel juntaram-se para cantar e tocar.
Começava aí a história de uma dupla folk antológica: Simon & Garfunkel.
A música “The Sound of Silence” foi composta para o primeiro álbum acústico, lançado em 1964. Como não houve repercussão, e as vendas foram muito ruins, Paul Simon partiu para a inglaterra, tentando embrenhar-se no circuito folk local. Mas sua empreitada durou pouco, e no ano seguinte, para sua surpresa, retornou a Nova York e encontrou a canção “The Sound of Silence” no topo das paradas, numa versão engordada com guitarras, baixo e bateria. Com este novo fôlego, a dupla uniu-se novamente e deu-se então a brilhante tragetória.
Cheguei a esta canção por intermédio de um filme honônimo, “O Som do Silêncio”, que conta a estória de um garoto que visita com a escola uma base militar com bombas nucleares. Chocado com aquela realidade, ele ingenuamente nega-se a jogar beisebol enquanto as bombas não sejam desarmadas. A partir daí, o que seria um gesto inútil de uma criança desconhecida toma proporções cada vez maiores. Um pequeno jornal local divulga a notícia do protesto do menino. Tal jornal chega às mãos de um astro do basquete, e este, comovido, adere ao protesto, negando-se a jogar. Em alguns dias, o mundo todo vê-se dominado por uma onda de silêncio.
A outra música anexada, “Bookends Theme”, é uma pequenina canção que muito marcou um dos momentos mais belos da série “Anos Incríveis”, em que o Kevin e Paul, amigos inseparáveis, brigam por conflitarem num momento muito intenso da vida de Paul, em que ele realizará seu Bar Mitzvah (ritual judaico que marca a entrada na vida adulta). No fim do episódio, sem qualquer explicação, Kevin simplesmente aparece na festa para contemplar o amigo, e dá-se uma cena em câmera lenta, mostrando cenas da festa ao som desta canção, que diz: “foi-se um tempo de inocência, um tempo de confidências. Deve ter sido há muito tempo, eu tenho uma fotografia. Preserve suas memórias: elas são tudo que lhe é deixado”.
